18 Months = NURSERY!

Clark finally hit 18 months which meant that he is now eligible to attend nursery at church. It also means that mom and dad are able to listen to the lessons without worrying that Clark is going to peg someone in the back of the head with his pacie...or a book...or his sippy cup. I did not worry that his transition to nursery would be difficult because I can honestly say that Clark had never gone through a separation anxiety phase. He likes it that we are around, but if there are other kids and toys around, he really doesn't care where we are. He has bolted into the room every week and immediately dived into the toys. I ask every week to see if Clark behaves himself since he has now discovered that he is bigger than most of the other kids and likes to sometimes use all 31 pounds of himself to get what he wants, but we get good reports every week. This week we were told that he did all the actions for Once There Was a Snowman perfectly, which I, being the proud mother that I am, thought was amazing. Here are his stats from his 18 month checkup:
Height: 36 1/4 inches -- 97% (+2 inches from 3 months ago)
Weight: 31 pounds -- 95% (+ 2 lbs. 8 oz. from 3 months ago)
Head Circumference: 19 3/4 inches -- 95% (+1/4 inch from 3 months ago)
So pretty much, we have a big and tall kid with a huge noggin (cue the lines from So I married an Axe Murderer). I love my big boy!!

Busch Gardens

For our final day together with Tanner's parents, we decided to 'take it easy' and go to Busch Gardens all day. As if we hadn't walked enough that week! We had so much fun though. Tanner even got his dad to ride on one of the 'scary rides', and that was the end of that. He was kind enough to watch Clark while Tanner, myself, and his mom went on all the roller coasters. Greg, Tanner and Clark went on the log water ride, and Clark had a great time until the last drop when he got kind of scared, but as you can see from the picture, it put another smile on Greg's face! Thanks for the fun week...just thinking and blogging about everything we did this week exhausted me again! We love you! Thanks for coming!

Annapolis

We stayed in Annapolis Tuesday night because we wanted to tour the Naval Academy and the town the following day. As we were checking out of the hotel, a man said to us "you should hurry because they are closing down the entrances into the campus for the air show". Air show? What air show? We came to find out that it was graduation week at the Academy and the Blue Angels were coming to perform as part of the weeks festivities. I just have to take a moment and say that sometimes it seems like everything that can go wrong on a trip does go wrong or you just miss the one cool thing that was in town the day before you visited, but every once in a while, something great happens that you didn't even plan for...and today was one of those days for us. We were able to get on campus early and take a wonderful tour after which Tanner and I decided we would love it if Clark wanted to go there for school. We then went and found some great seats for the Blue Angels air show. It was amazing! I can't even describe it. Tanner said after that it was one of the coolest things he had EVER seen. Clark loved watching the jets fly over, and he only got scared once when the engines got really loud. It seemed even more special because we were surrounded by midshipmen in their uniforms. I remarked how we started the week visiting the Wright Brother's memorial seeing the very beginning of flight, and to then see where we are now with FA 18 Hornets flying through the air like it is nothing is nothing short of remarkable.
This is the entrance to the midshipmen dorms..fyi it is the largest dormitory in the US.

Gettysburg and DC

On Tuesday, we drove the opposite direction and went up to Gettysburg, PA. We had fun seeing all the sites again, and it was even more fun to have Clark entertain us (and all the other visitors!) throughout the day.

After Gettysburg, we down to DC and visited the memorial sites. We showed up just as the sun was setting and it was beautiful to see the monuments at that time of day. We hope Grandpa got some good pictures!!!

OBX

Lucky for us, Tanner's parents stayed for most of the week following graduation so we could go and play. And boy did we play. On Monday, we drove down to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. We visited the Wright Brother's memorial at Kitty Hawk and stood on the sand dune (now covered in grass) where they flew their first gliders. We understood why the Wright Brothers chose this area for flying because it was a beautiful and WINDY day.
The Outer Banks is known for having some beautiful lighthouses, and we saw most of them. We wondered why they were painted in alternating black and white. We found out that it is because those colors contrast the most and therefore are the easiest to see from the sea!
We also traipsed up some large sand dunes which were a lot of fun, and it even prompted me to break out into song singing Arabian Nights from Aladdin. Clark loved having all the open space to run (and roll!) around on. We even made the footprints in the sand that is now the background at the top of our blog.
Our last stop was the beach. Clark loved playing and being chased by the waves, until he got knocked over. It was a beautiful evening and it was a relaxing end to a fun filled day.

We got this rare picture with Grandpa smiling! Maybe it was because he was off duty!

Graduation Day

How do you commemorate a day that you have planned, prepared, worked, and dreamed about for 10 years? A lot of people don't like commemoration days like graduation because there is so much buildup and hype, there is no way that one day can possibly give you the satisfaction you desire after slaving away for so long and accomplishing so much. And it can also be depressing to think that you have accomplished your most difficult goal to date, only to turn around and realize that all it really did was prepare you for more even more difficult goals in the future. There will always be the hokie or lame (as my father stated) speech given by the class president that are so full of inside jokes that you wonder if you actually attended the same school, and the awards to those who accomplished so much that you wonder if they are in fact human...seriously.

Despite all this, I happened to really enjoy Tanner's graduation from law school. In fact, I was glad for the one or two speeches that I could tune out, because it allowed me to reflect on my own memories, our own experiences as a family, and it made me realize how great our life really is and has been.
Then there was the really great speech given by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and I recommend not only reading it, but watching it as well.

We are grateful to our parents who came out to celebrate Tanner's sucess. And thankfully they didn't just share A day with us. They shared in the entire experience with us.
Congratulations Tanner!

Pre-Grad Touring

Grandma and Grandpa Nielson arrived a couple of days before graduation, and we decided to go down to Norfolk and see some sites. Tanner and I have lived in the area for 3 years and only been down to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area a couple of times. We decided to take a tour of the Norfolk Naval Base a.k.a Home of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. It was a really interesting tour, and we even got to see the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise.

Clark also discovered that Grandma has really cool sunglasses. He was pretty careful with them the first day, but a few days later, he broke them :-( Sorry Grandma!

After the tour of the naval base, we drove over to where they have docked the Battleship Wisconsin in the harbor. We were able to board the ship and see into most of the rooms. We had a lot of fun running around on it and it was really interesting to learn that it fought in the first gulf war. It has since been decommissioned, but it is constantly maintained so it can be recalled anytime to go back out to battle.
After our military themed day, we drove over to Virginia Beach, and Tanner and his parents popped out of the car while I stayed with a sleeping Clark in the car to check out the beach. After we got back, we met up with my parents who had driven up from North Carolina and went to a pre-graduation dinner in honor of Tanner. It was a fun day!!

Strawberry Picking

Today we went over to Surrey on the ferry to pick strawberries at a local farm. We went with our friends Dave and Jenn, and we had so much fun! The woman running the place said that it was okay to eat while we worked...

As you can see, Clark had no problem with that.
They were the best strawberries we have ever tasted.

Clark got really into putting the strawberries into the basket. On the way to the car, he thought a rock would be good too.

Top Twelve Reasons...

Why I LOVE Tricia's house (I thought of two more than Ten and didn't want to cut any of them out):

12) Having girls night out with Tricia, Courtney, Bella, myself...and Clark. And sleeping in the big bed with Tricia and Courtney while the boys were at Father's and Sons.

11) Seeing Tricia totally defend my child to the manager at The Children's Place. It's a long story that can only be told effectively out loud, but it was great. Oh, where was I in this story? Hiding outside with the rest of the kids while she confronted the worker. Seriously, don't mess with Trish. I'm glad she is on my side.

10) Junk food...Ahoy fruit, Doritos, Cupcakes, M&Ms, Butterfingers, Crunch Bars, and Babe Ruth's...take your pick. But what about those elusive 100 grand bars? Tricia, any comment?

9) Getting to see Dan a.k.a. The Cleaning Machine in action. When I wouldn't allow him to help me with dinner one night, he decided to break out the Floormate and clean the hardwood kitchen floor all around me. I guess he decided that if I wasn't going to let him help me, he was going to box me in around the stove with wet floor. Still, I have to say the floors looked magnifico Dan!

8) Playing the "I know more characters than you from Star Wars" game with Carter and Courtney. Yeah, I lost. I even came up with Jar Jar Binks and they still beat me with some random Wookie name!

7) Playing and getting beat by Carter in Wii bowling AND baseball. And you might just chalk it up to the fact that I am pathetic at those games, but seriously, Carter is ridiculously good.

6) Bella groovin' from side to side with a big ol' smile on her face.

5) Spending time in ALL the rooms that my mom and I wallpapered.

4) Getting some kind of makeover. It's usually a haircut, and it gets shorter every time I go. I like it more and more, but Tanner is worried I will come home bald after another visit. But I am just glad I have a free personal stylist anytime I need one.

3) Getting to be part of the mile a minute action that is Tricia's life. All I can say is that I am glad she has a sweet ride, because she spends a lot of time in that car.

2) The fact that Melanie STILL calls to hang out with us on the phone even though she is totally sad she can't be there in person. We were sad too!

1) Wii. Staying up with Dan and Tricia until 1 or 2am playing Darts and a running, skipping, and jumping game was definitely a highlight. The Wii told Tricia and I that we are BFF, as if we didn't know that already! I have to say my dart playing was pretty awesome. However, Dan and Tricia hit a new record low (or high depending on how you look at it) with their respective Wii fitness ages.

As you can see, they weren't excited about it at all.

Seguine Fun...as usual!

I've decided there is really no point in buying a huge load of toys for my children because after about a week, they are only interested in playing with someone else's toys, not theirs. So Clark was VERY happy to see the toys at the Seguine house. He still isn't too into playing with other kids very much because that would mean competition for toys, and we can't have that now can we? However, he does still see Bella as a little bit of a toy, and a very animated one at that! She hardly ever cries, but would quickly produce tears if Clark came within two feet of her. She knows what's up and she will NOT be toyed with...literally. So I guess he just had to 'settle' with swings, a car, a dump truck, and a helmet.

My Boy Blake

I just have to give a shout out to my boy Blake for the amazing job he did on AI this week. He's been my fav from the beginning. Do I sound like an annoying teenager instead of a 25 year old wife and mother? I don't care. He's the bomb. Just admit it. You all want to watch and listen again...go ahead press play now.
