This One's For You Mom

Okay Mom...so I know you don't have anything better to do but sit on the couch and read blogs now that you have a broken arm ;-)...SO....I went around our house and took pictures of all the shrubbery and flowers that looked interesting to me. Of course I don't know the names of any of them, but I would like to, so here is your "What is this plant/flower?" quiz!

(didn't we have a version of these that were orange at the Claremont House?)--I think they are named for a bird right?

(funky yet interesting!)

(I think these are both a plant and a tree? You had the red version of them in the front yard at the birdhouse one summer)

(smells super good)

(how cool looking are these??!!!)
(these are blossoms on a plant hedge going around the back of our house)

Wicked!

So my prayers have been answered. Another family has moved into the branch and they have a little boy that is Clark's age...and he's nice! We invited them over today to play since we are nearing the end of Ramadan and Clark is off school for the next week. They had such a blast, and we didn't even have to break up any arguments or fighting the entire 3 hours they were here except with issues regarding Andrew trying to get in the fray (it's tough being the younger sibling...I should know ;-).

I was sitting with his mom and we were chatting and drinking strawberry smoothies (yes, mom I made SMOOTHIES...die of shock). We were talking about how well the boys were playing together and she started to chuckle and said "I don't know if I should tell you this..." and of course then I was like "Oh come on!" So she said that this morning before they came over, she told her son Mark that they were going to Clark's house to play today. Her son said "Oh no mom, we can't go over to Clark's house....he's wicked!" I busted up laughing. She said she couldn't really get from him why he felt that way, but maybe Clark wasn't as sweet on Sunday as I thought I saw when I was peeking through the glass into the primary room.

Anyway, later when I was walking them out to their car, I said to Mark as he was getting in the car. "So Mark, what do you think? Do you think Clark is still wicked?" He smiled and said "Oh no, he's cool."

Thank goodness he likes Clark because Clark sure likes Mark..."plus" says Clark "Clark and Mark rhyme." So I guess they just HAVE to be friends now.

I am just glad I don't have a wicked son anymore.

Kid Updates

Clark, who has always been my BIG boy is growing up. He is now adjusting to our life here in Jakarta. We have all been excited for him to start his last year of preschool and so far he loves it. My mom sent us the cutest red white and blue clothes for the kids, and Clark just loves his shirt and I have to tell him he is only allowed to wear it once a week. He is so much like me (peach skirt anyone?), even down to the skipping over the cracks in the ground outside just for fun. I still remember doing that. He never wants to be alone (me), he only wants to do fun stuff (me), and he always makes up creative excuses as to why he can't do the hard things (me also). He is fun to be around and he is a good big brother and it is fun to watch him and Andrew play together. He still takes naps everyday for about 2 hours after school and I love him for that as well as his big bright eyes and happy go lucky personality.

Andrew is my happy to play by himself kid as long as you are okay with him getting eggs out of the refrigerator and rolling them across the floor, flooding the floor with the water from the Aqua dispenser, or bringing half a watermelon from the fridge upstairs to me first thing in the morning while I am still trying to get out of bed and saying "Mom, please can I have some watermelon?" in the sweetest voice ever that I almost don't care that he has dripped watermelon juice all the way through the house (that's the longest run on sentence EVER! No, I am not going to fix it honey). We have nicknamed him "the destroyer" and not having known that we call him that, the nursery leader on Sunday said that he is just great except that they call him "destructo" because he topples everyone's building blocks....but he then flashes this big 'ol cute smile and it's just so endearing. That's Andrew, also known as Andoozie (he is SO clumsy) and Pain-in-the-A (see above regarding eggs and water). :-) He also wants to go to school SO badly. He is always on the go team, and after we get back from dropping Clark off everyday, he rides his bike (which he rides better than Clark I might add). He reminds me in both looks and charm of my dear husband, and I just can't help but melt at the sight of his cute face, which is why I must march him straight to his room after said egg and water episode(s), because otherwise he just might flash me that sly grin of his and I'll be done. One thing he does get from me is he can do the Bruce Carter lip lift, which I can also do. Whenever he thinks something I say is weird or funny, he will repeat it back to me, and do the Bruce Carter lip lift...it's hilarious.

Andrew charming LaLa, our driver.

...and then there is Audrey. She is super cute...or as Andrew says "SUPA COOT". She is smiley, giggly, and is getting some pudge around her wrists and legs. She is 5 months old and weighs about 14 pounds...so she is packing it on nicely. Our pembantu, Siti, doesn't know how she is so big only drinking my milk (Indonesians rarely breastfeed for very long because they all have to work). She is just dying to feed her some real food, and I am equally dying to not. I have to say that starting solids is NOT one of my favorite things and I put it off for as long as I feasibly can. She sleeps great, eats great, and is starting to chill out more on her own for longer periods. She is like Houdini because we kept seeing that she HAD rolled over but had yet to see it. One time she did it as Tanner and I were supposed to both be watching and waiting for it, but somehow we both got distracted and the sly girl busted a move. Finally the fifth time was the charm and we actually saw her skills. She loves being outside and playing peek-a-boo, but don't even think about tossing her in the air. YOU....WILL...PAY a la blood curdling scream. She is starting to find her voice and squawks a lot when she's just hanging out. I have a feeling she is going to be a talker just like her mama. She still has her birth marks on her forehead and in between her eyes, and I really wasn't conscious of them when we were in the states, but then when we came here, a lot of the locals ask about it i.e. "What happened to her face?!" I read that they are most likely going to go away by the time she is 2 or 3, so it will be interesting to see if/when they go. She has daddy (and mommy for that matter) wrapped around her pudgy little thumb and I think Andrew is just biding his time until he can play WITH her instead of ON her. I say the line "Andrew, please don't squeeze your sister's head" at least once a day. All of her darker newbie hair has fallen out and the blonde is starting to thicken up. I think Clark wraps it up nicely when is says on a fairly regular basis "Mom, Audrey's so cute at being zero." AND "Mom, Audrey's the best."

As for me...Clark starting school was a big thing for me just for the sake of having a forced routine. I like routines, but I am not very disciplined to keep them going. So, I like the fact that we have a schedule now to work around. I read to the kids in the car on the way to and from school and I love pick up and drop off. It's just such a traditional mom thing to do, and I find a lot of joy in it. I like my alone time with Andrew when we get back to go play outside together, and I always get good snuggle time in with Audrey during feedings. I have to say I was wondering about the whole 3 kid thing there for a minute, but now that there is some method to the madness, I am enjoying it a lot. The things that I thought were going to be difficult moving here have turned out not to be such a biggie and some things that I thought were going to be easy are not. I'll save that for another post. Suffice it to say, I am happy and at peace with the stage of life I am in. My kids are my life, and it's great. There is a lot going on around me and there are temptations to do a lot for myself and leave my kids home (because I can), but most of the time that doesn't sit well with me, and I think I have finally found the right balance and am learning to shut out everything and everyone else around me that tries to tell me otherwise.

While my friend Kelly was visiting us from East Timor (get your atlas out yo), she took some cute pics of the kids while they were playing outside (see the good ones up above). Kelly's visit deserves a blog or two on their own, so stay tuned, and fasten your seat belts because it was a wild and crazy ride...and I was just in the passenger seat most of the time!

Taman Safari

So we had heard RAVE reviews about this place called Taman Safari (Safari Park) from pretty much the second we arrived in Jakarta. It is about an hour and a half away, with no traffic, but usually the traffic is pretty bad. We decided that today would be a great time to go since Ramadan just started and people usually don't go out a ton on the weekends since everyone is fasting and therefore tired. ;-) We also got an early start and arrived just after it opened, so it was a quick drive and not too busy.

Taman Safari is a drive through zoo and also has an amusement park and water park. We didn't even go to the other parks, we just drove through the zoo, and we will definitely be back! It completely lived up to all the hype. I will let the pictures and the video show just how close and amazing it was...you must watch the video!

On the way up they have a bunch of carrot and banana stands to buy food for the animals. It was great, and we had hoards of cute little children around our car and we gave out a bunch of our coins that seem to accumulate ridiculously fast here. They have coins equivalent to 1/2 cent here, so you can imagine. Anyway, the boys loved it, we loved it...it was awesome. Tanner said jokingly that when we waited in the car outside the gate to the Lion area, it felt like we were in Jurassic park. I felt the same after we entered the gate and it closed behind us. It was just us and the lions ... a little disconcerting, but the lions didn't seem to care about us at all, so then it was just fun. One of my favorite things was actually all the HATI-HATI! (Warning!) signs about what could happen if we decided to get out of the car. The only hazard we experienced to being THAT close to the animals was that at one point Clark got totally sneezed on by a zebra, and he burst into tears and wanted to go home. It was pretty nasty, but he recovered...eventually. :-)

Audrey Fix--4 Months

Audrey is four months TODAY! I can't believe it. It seems like FOREVER ago that I had her, but at the same time, she has grown so fast in such a small time. Here are some cute ones of her and then some comparison pics of her and her brothers at the same age. I think they have the same parents. What do you think??

(Andrew at 4 months--I think Audrey and Andrew look a lot alike at 4 months)

(Man, Clark was such a fatty! I can't believe he was this big at 4 months!)

Lollipops and Futsol!

We had a busy Saturday! It felt good to be out and about almost as if we have lived here forever, except for the fact that the minature golf place that supposedly exists does NOT in fact exist any longer, and is instead a big trash pile with homeless people living there. So instead, we went over to the mall and showed dad Lollipops and you would have thought Tanner was 5 years old again. He had a blast running around with the boys and shooting the ball guns at the other little kids and sliding down the inflatable slides. Even Audrey got in on the action a little bit.The boys had a blast and wore themselves out just in time for us to go home and put everyone down for naps so that Tanner and I could go play tennis with some friends while Siti stayed at home with the kids while they napped. We had fun and won the game. Both of us need some lessons and practice, but we're a good team together.

We returned home just in time to get the kids up and ready to go out again. We had been here oh about a week when Tanner found out about the embassy's futsol team. It's like soccer but is on a much smaller field so it is super quick and fast. It is very entertaining to watch because there is always a lot going on and more goals seem to be scored. Tanner of course had to get in on the action. His back apparently is feeling great...until it doesn't ;-). The team had a game Saturday evening that was a two hour marathon of 4 games. We decided to be crazy and take the whole family. It actually ended up to be a lot of fun. The boys played with a soccer ball back behind where the game was being played and the place provided drinks and snacks gratis so everyone was happy! Audrey chilled in the baby bjorn and slept through most of it. Clark got a soccer ball right in the face when he was watching the game a little too close to the neting and someone on the opposing team just happened to kick the ball in just the exact right spot to have the ball go hurtling into the net and into Clark's face. Sweet. Clark decided he was done watching after that and found a kid playing a DS and zoned out watching him play the rest of the time. Andrew was the dance machine and got down and boogied to the music that was playing in the back ground. Tanner scored two awesome goals...one off of some guys face (not the face of the guy that got Clark in the face;-). Anyway, it was so much fun talking to more locals and playing with them. Everyone was super nice and it was just a fun night out with the fam watching dad play.

Air Shipment Arrival

Our air shipment arrived after just over a month, and we were all very excited to get some toys, linens, clothes, baby gear, and other goodies we pack in our air freight. Now that we have done it once, I think I would not pack some things to be air shipped and make sure to pack others, but all in all, we have everything we need for the moment, and certainly given the craziness of moving at the time, we did a pretty decent job. The number one thing was of course the boys' toys and their bikes. They have been having fun playing with familiar things and riding around the neighborhood. Audrey got a bunch of her baby gear: swing, bumbo, cradle, etc. and she is enjoying lounging in them......although someone else seems to be enjoying her gear as well...We also packed some tupperware, and I was so glad we did because it has been annoying trying to store leftovers and lunch for Tanner to take to work without it. I thought it was interesting when I looked at our air freight tags and saw that they had been flown through Gatwick Airport in England...my old stomping grounds. It just kind of put a smile on my face.

In other news, we received a package from Tanner's parents, and we were ALL excited to see the yummy treats and goodies inside. Thank you for everything. The boys have been taking their monster trucks and motorcycles everywhere with them! The rest of our stuff that was shipped by boat will arrive in country on Aug. 2 which means we will probably have it by the middle of the month, which will make it two months for us to get everything...not too bad.

I Love Late Birthday Presents!

So Tanner kept saying how sorry he was for not being 'on the ball' with my birthday this year because of moving here and getting settled etc. etc., but I honestly didn't care, I was just happy to finally be here with my family and to not have completely lost my mind (emphasis on completely). Anyway, Tanner came home one night, plopped down on the couch, threw a little drawstring bag in my lap and said "Happy Birthday!" When I opened it, it was a beautiful pearl necklace. I loved it! He then lobbed three more bags in my lap and enclosed were two more pearl bracelets and another necklace made of crushed pearls. I felt like the luckiest girl ever!
The local pearls from Indonesia are beautiful. Apparently there are freshwater and salt water pearls (I am clueless when it comes to these kinds of things). The salt water pearls are more rounded and smooth, and the fresh water ones tend to have more ridges on them and not be quite as round due to the lack of salt. My bracelets are fresh water and my necklace is salt water. The other wonderful thing about buying them here in Indonesia is that they are incredibly affordable. It was the best gift because I really want to buy things that I can have for a long time and even pass down to my children and grandchildren. My mom let me wear her pearl necklace that she received from her mother on my wedding day, and I hope I can have the same kind of tradition with my daughter one day.

Quarterly Clarkisms (and a few Andoozies)

Reader Discretion is Advised:

04/06/10
Cherylyn: Clark, did you go potty?
Clark
: Yep I already did. There’s no more potties, see, can you hear it?
Clark
: See, no more potty.

04/13/10
Clark
: (while going peepee in the toilet) Dada, when I was at Thatcher’s house, I went peepee together with Thatcher … and we made an X!!!

Tanner: (after Andrew threw his shirt in the laundry basket) Good job Andrew!
Andrew: You wecome [sic]!
Tanner: No, you say thank you, and then I say you’re welcome.
Andrew: You wecome [sic]!

04/17/10
Clark
: Mom, I love you.
Cherylyn: I love you too babe.
Clark
: No, I love you bayba bayba.

04/18/10
Clark
: Mama!
Tanner: What?
Clark
: No, I’m asking for mama. Mama!
Tanner: What (in a girl’s voice)?
Clark
: No, I want to talk to mama.
Tanner: Why don’t you want to talk to dada, dadas are pretty cool.
Clark
: No, mama is SUPER cool!
Cherylyn: (bursts into laughter in the adjacent room)

04/23/10
Tanner: Okay Clark, its time to take a nap.
Clark
: (while bursting into tears) But Dad, that is serious for me!!

04/27/10
Clark
: (When being disciplined) Dada, don’t spank me!
Tanner: I’m not going to spank you. Why do you keep using the word "spank"?!
Tanner: (puts Clark in timeout in his room and locks the door).
Clark
: Nooo! This is like spanking me!!

04/29/10
Clark
: Dada, you’re the greatest!
Cherylyn: What am I?
Clark
: You’re the smartest!

05/03/10
(Clark’s best friend from school, Caroline, came over with her mom to drop off food. Clark peed his bed during his nap, so needless to say, we opted to leave him in his room during the visit). Afterward:
Clark
: Is Caroline still here?
Tanner: Nope, she left.
Clark
: (crying) But I wanted to see her!
Tanner: I’m sorry, but if you hadn’t peed your pants you could have.
Clark
: (crying) But I didn’t get to tell her something that I needed to!
Tanner: What?
Clark: That Jonah’s (Clark’s cousin) leg had blood on it!

05/05/10
(Clark throwing the ball with an 11-year-old at a baseball game)
Clark
: Dada, I’m throwing the ball with this guy.
Tanner: What is his name? Ask him his name.
Clark
: Hey, what’s your name?
11-year-old: Brady.
Clark
: That’s a great name!

Clark
: Mama, did you know that Audrey has three mamas?
Cherylyn: Um, no. Who?
Clark
: You, Grammy, and Tricia.
Cherylyn: Well, Tricia is Audrey’s aunt, which means she’s your aunt too.
Clark
: No, she’s my snake!

(Dad walks out of his room donning his former Boy Scout uniform)
Clark
: Cool shirt Dad!!!! It’s my favorite!!

05/11/10
(Clark crying because he was told he can’t play any more games)
Cherylyn: Clarkie, you need to stop crying.
Clark
: I can’t stop crying
Cherylyn: Why not?
Clark
: Because my heart is making me sad!
(when putting Clark down for his nap, Tanner “fixed” his heart by tickling him to make him feel better)
Clark
: Nana, guess what Dada did?! He fixed my heart so that it wasn’t sad anymore!

05/12/10
(A minute after Tanner called Baby Audrey bayba-bayba)
Clark
: Dada, Audrey is not the bayba-bayba.
Tanner: She’s not?
Clark
: Nope, she’s the baby, and I’m the bayba-bayba.

Andrew: Baby Audey [sic] is supa [sic] cute!
Tanner: Is she super cute?
Andrew: Dada, you supa [sic] cute too!

05/19/10
(after Clark pushed Andrew on the ground, he himself fell off the couch and began crying)
Tanner: Clark, that’s karma.
Clark
: (crying) Dad, that doesn’t even make sense!

Tanner: Andrew/Clark! Stop playing with your milk and drink it. Now you have milk all over your faces and clothes…. Do you see milk all over my face?
Clark
: No, I only see spices (facial hair). You have spices on your cheeks and here under your chin.

05/25/10
Tanner: (talking with Cherylyn regarding an upcoming Indonesian language test) If I got 2s on the test, I wouldn’t feel stupid.
Clark
: Hey! We … don’t … say … STUPID!
Tanner: Okay, I wouldn’t feel like a nincompoop.
Clark
: Hey! We … don’t … say … POOP!

(Clark, with a stuffy nose, crying at the dinner table)
Tanner: Clark, say the prayer.
Clark
: I can’t because my nose is grumbling!
Tanner: Its okay, just relax. Say the prayer.
Clark
: I can’t. I can’t do this (sniffs in) because my nose makes a big mess!
(2 minutes later)
Clark
: Nose, stop doing that!!

06/05/10
Andrew: grr, dada I angry with you.
Clark
: Andrew, why are you mad at dada?
Andrew: no! I angry with dada.
Clark
: Why are you angry with dada? He’s the greatest.

06/06/10
Clark
: (talking to the TV while playing a Wii game) Hey, stop that I say!

06/25/10
(When pulling out of the driveway of our new house, Clark and Andrew see a friend coming down the sidewalk, and start crying hysterically because they want to play. We, including the driver, start laughing)
Clark: Dada, that’s not a funny joke!

06/26/10
Tanner: Clark, what are you doing?
Clark
: Um, your game phone (iPod Touch) ran out of gas.

06/28/10

Tanner: Alright boys, go upstairs to bed.

Clark: But dad, this is terrible for me!
